Mackmyra werd in 1999 opgericht door acht vrienden van de Koninklijke Technische Hogeschool in Stockholm en geldt als een pionier van de Zweedse single malt. De distilleerderij ligt bij Gävle en legt sterk de nadruk op lokale herkomst en duurzaamheid: vrijwel alle ingrediënten komen uit de omgeving en de tweede, in 2011 geopende fabriek werkt op zwaartekracht. De whisky rijpt onder meer diep in een oude mijn. In 2024 ging het bedrijf failliet.
